Sydney Maris Gras is fucking rad. It really is. If Cher was a month she would be March in Sydney. Big, camp, sparkly ridiculous and fun. I actually came to Sydney for the first time when I was just a young 18 year old form my little village in England. I was travelling around the world and by pure chance ended up in Sydney the week of Mardi Gras. I’d never even heard of it before coming. I think Cher was holding my destiny card that day. Sydney Mardi gras was the first time I had really done something gay on mass, i’d only really met a couple of gay people before that. It blow my mind and genuinely changed me as a person. Making me bold and brave enough to go home from my travels and come out to friends and family. I Moved to Sydney exactly 10 years later the week of Mardi Gras and the magic was still well and truly there.
Gay pride at Mardi Gras. The best
As part of Mardi gras my favourite thing to do is march in the parade. Its ace for so many reason. Bringing together mates, doing something for the community, putting a message out to the rest of the world that being gay is ok!…. and of course, getting to wear something really small and really slutty and really sparkly and mince up Oxford street in front of 100,000 people while getting cheered like you are Beyonce. Its rad. Nothing actually tops it. And I find its one of those things that when I try to explain it to friends they just don’t get how good it is. Like its SO good. Words don’t really do it justice. So when I can’t articulate something. I make a documentary about it. Coz thats what I do.
Yup. THIS is actually an outfit. Good times.
This year, my dear friend Tim Millgate AKA ‘Tina Turnon’ decided to do a float for his 30th Birthday. Well when someone as fabulous as Tim decides to do a float. You… and all the greatest people in Sydney decide to join in! Tim does a lot of amazing work for the gay community of Sydney and this was our time to show him how much that we all round think he is pretty fucking special.
The living legend Tina Turnon and some other lady on the left
This marked my last Mardi Gras Parade for a little while as I move back to london and maybe to America. I know I am going to watch this video over and over again to remember how much fun it was, and when I’m 75 and my tits are in my shoes, I’ll look at it and think ‘fuck we were fabulous’. To all the wonderful ‘tuners’ love ya guys. xxx
