SWIM

Last summer…my wonderful friend Tarryn told me that she had joined a swimming club in Amsterdam. Each morning they dive into the lakes just outside the city, swimming deep out into the open water.

"What a lovely summer activity I thought” but she continued to go right through into winter. Swimming every morning even when the ground was frozen.

Tarryn joined to carve out time for herself, to test her limits (it’s mind over matter in 5 degree water ), and to learn Dutch… asking her fellow swimmers to only speak to her in ‘Nederlands' and not English!

I loved all of this. And since I’d always wanted to try filming in open water, I asked if I could make a short documentary about her early-morning adventures.

It reminded me of when I lived in Sydney: I’d pack a whole day of activity into the hours before work. Tarryn is doing the same here: losing herself in nature, far from screens and distractions, while the rest of us are still snoozing. (In our warm beds!)
